The Metallurgical Engineer position is permanently housed at the Newport NH facility of Pine Tree Castings but has some operating responsibility for material issues with other Ruger facilities both in NH and Prescott AZ.

Qualification Requirements:

•  B.S. in Metallurgy
•  Heat treatment work experience
•  Knowledge of material properties including strength, toughness, hardness and finishing characteristics.
•  Hands on experience in metallography, microhardness and interpretation of microstructures
•  Experience with low alloy steels, stainless steels and ductile iron

General Duties to Include:

•  Support in house heat treat facilities which include; 5 vacuum furnaces, 6 atmosphere furnaces, salt line, induction heat treating and induction silver soldering
•  Develop heat treatment processes for Ruger and commercial customers including hardening, case hardening, quenching, tempering, austempering, martempering, stress relieving and annealing
•  Write and revise work instructions for the heat treatment and foundry processes.
•  Implement process control and process improvement techniques
•  Support problem resolution regarding issues with production materials
•  Review incoming material characteristics for barrel manufacturing, and foundry melt stock
•  Interface with outside testing labs on all material issues
•  Interface with material vendors of foundry melt stock, barrel stock and purchased parts and materials
•  Interface with metal fabricators
•  Interface with outside heat treat and HIP vendors
•  Support the hammer forge process
•  Conduct failure analysis
•  Support Ruger design and manufacturing in material selection and specification

The Newport, NH Division is looking for a Chief Engineer for Shotguns. This position has product design and product engineering responsibility for the firm's new and existing shotgun products.

Principal Accountabilities

1.  Creates and/or modifies all types of shotgun designs using CAD drafting tools. This includes the design of components as well as the selection of materials to be used in the final products.
2.  Supports and coordinates activities with the manufacturing engineering staff as required.
3.  Works closely with manufacturing to resolve production problems related to tooling, cutters, speeds and feeds.
4.  Tests and evaluates functions of product prototypes.
5.  Develops and executes project plans/schedules to satisfy design project requirements.
6.  Provides technical support to internal and external customers.

Background/Experience

 Requires a minimum of 8-10 years of product design and product engineering experience in a firearms design capacity preferably designing all types of shotguns.

 Must have demonstrated skills in 3D/Solid Modeling using SolidWorks, Pro E or a compatible CAD system.

 Knowledge of Geometric Modeling would be a plus. Should be familiar with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Mechanism software as required in firearms design.

 Background in design for manufacturability is necessary.

 A Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field is required.
